Hotel Luci di La Muntagna, Sardinia Review
It’s a cloudy but warm day in April, and we’re early in the season, so we’re very grateful that there are hardly any other tourists around the spectacular Costa Smeralda. My partner and I booked a trip to explore Sardinia’s famous Emerald Coast in low season to skip the crowds and hefty prices. We decided to stay at the well-known Hotel Luci di la Muntagna in Porto Cervo.
Hotel Luci di la Muntagna has been around since 1966 and is one of the first hotels to be built in Porto Cervo, designed by Michele Busiri Vici. According to the hotel’s website, Busiri Vici was one of the founding architects in the Costa Smeralda area and is responsible for significant works in the area.
The hotel’s striking style is inspired by Mediterranean architecture, which draws on elements typical of Morocco, Tunisia, Spain and Greece. Picture white, smooth-flowing terraced arches, whitewashed stone walls and rounded spires that create an elegant but relaxed look that blends thoughtfully into the natural landscape.

The view from the terrace
First Impressions on Arrival
You can see how the hotel got its name. On arrival, it truly felt as if we were on “la Muntagna” (a mountain), as the hotel is perched on a hill overlooking the harbour of Porto Cervo. I can imagine spending hours there in the summer, watching the sunset, counting the superyachts come and go, and wondering who the next celebrity in town might be.
At night, you’ll see the Luci from the impressive views on the terrace. As the sun sets, the lights come on little by little in buildings in Porto Cervo, and reflections in the water of the Marina make a thousand lights twinkle in the darkness.
Check-in experience
We pass the small stone sign at the entrance marked Hotel Luci di La Muntagna and step through the doors to check in. The welcome is speedy, warm, and professional — a pleasure that’s not always guaranteed. We are told that check-out is at 10 am (a little earlier than hoped) and we’re asked to leave a small security deposit in case of room damage.
The reception lobby is located at the top of the “mountain”, so a lift is needed to take you down to the bedroom levels – a note of caution: there are a few steps here and there, which might make it difficult for people with buggies and wheelchairs.
The Room’s in Hotel Luci di la Muntagna, Sardinia
Comfort, Space, and Decor
The room is compact, cosy and shabby chic in design, with Sardinian traditional fabrics and rustic plastered walls with a white and pastel blue colour theme.
Our junior suite feels comfortable and is a guest’s favourite according to the hotel’s website. At the opposite side of the entrance is a lovely balcony with views of the sea and Porto Cervo’s marina. And it’s here that you appreciate the full structure of the hotel, like a rustic, gentle, white woolly mammoth. Curvy in shape, its rooms with balconies align in a sweeping sequence, like an amphitheatre for the spectators (or guests) to admire the views. You’ll also find two chairs and a table waiting, so you can sit back and enjoy the show.
Room Amenities
It is a cosy clean room, with a big tv that hangs on a wall opposite the bed. There’s air conditioning (essential for Sardinian summers), a safe, a wardrobe, extra pillows, a hairdryer and walk in shower. The minibar is lightly stocked with water, coke and beer but we found no trace of a very much needed ironing board. Going out in Porto Cervo with creased clothes is not ideal!
Inside the bathroom, there is plenty of shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and a grooming kit.
Sleep Quality
The bed is a good-sized bed, not too big to get lost in it and not too small to elbow your partner multiple times overnight. Pillows are very thin pillows. This is good for me, because I’m a thin pillow person, but maybe not all are so take note.
One annoying thing I often dislike in hotels is the lack of plugs next to the bed, for phone charging. So I am forced into two directions: either unplug the side bed lamp or charge my things in the bathroom. I opted for the second.
Food & Breakfast Experience
The delicious breakfast, included in the price, had a vast selection of sweet croissants, cakes, Easter specialities (as it was Easter time), nice coffee, yoghurt and fruits, and cereals. It felt like a generous start to the day.
Hotel Parking
There is a private parking lot in front of the hotel, but it will add €30 a day to your bill. We were lucky to find on-street parking outside the hotel for free, but I can imagine during peak season this would be much more difficult.
Pool, Common Areas, and Facilities
The outdoor pool is a decent size—just big enough to swim laps in if you really wanted to. There is a large terrace and living space where you can enjoy the views over large windows, framing the mountains and the town like a painting.
The terrace is a wonderful asset of this hotel, where I could picture myself enjoying it every night of summer, holding a glass of wine or spritz. Without mentioning the amazing wine selection they have in the bar, you can order a bottle for better value or sip some of the best wines on Sardinia too by the glass. During the aperitivo hour, early evenings you’ll be served some small nibbles to go with it.

Hotel Luci di La Muntagna Prices 2025
Expect to pay between £100 in low season and up to £360 per night in high season. In August, a minimum stay of 4 nights applies.
The Service
The service is relaxed yet professional—friendly without being overbearing. Staff aren’t constantly hovering, but they’re right there when you need them. Just as it should be. They know their craft and deliver it with quiet confidence.
Things I Loved About Hotel Luci Di La Muntagna
The views! Outdoor spaces, living areas, and terraces all with stunning views—that’s what stays with you. I’ve mentioned it already, but in short: the service was great, there was a fantastic selection of wines, and while we didn’t try the restaurant, it sounded impressive with many authentic Sardinian dishes.
Things I Think Could Be Better
The price is likely on the higher side in summer for a property of this kind, but then, that’s the cost of staying somewhere with a celebrity crowd. It’s also worth noting that many hotels in the area close for half the year, which inevitably affects pricing.
We did notice the lack of bedside plugs—hopefully just an issue in our room—and while the room was on the smaller side, a little extra TLC in places wouldn’t go amiss.
Would I Recommend Hotel Luci di La Muntagna?
Scenic seekers and romantic couples would love this place. It has everything you need for a comfortable stay. I recommend at least 2 nights to get settled in, as often 1 night doesn’t feel enough.
🛎 Thinking of Staying at Hotel Luci di La Muntagna?
