Overview: What to Expect at Hotel Cala Reale

As someone who grew up in Sardinia’s southeast, I rarely explored the North, but early in the season this year, I decided to visit La Pelosa in Stintino.

La Pelosa (widely believed to be nicknamed “the fluffy” for its soft sand and sea vegetation) is one of the most popular beaches in Sardinia, and I was looking for somewhere to stay nearby. While planning the trip, I browsed a few options from our where to stay in northern Sardinia guide before settling on Hotel Cala Reale. It ticked many boxes: an affordable 3-star hotel with good reviews, within walking distance of Stintino village, an outdoor pool, a free summer shuttle to La Pelosa Beach, gardens, a children’s playground, and a restaurant.

It was late April when we visited Hotel Cala Reale, and there were limited hotel choices in the area just after Easter – most hotels were still closed for the season. We were (optimistically) thinking we would make the most of the hotel pool, but it wasn’t quite warm enough.

Location & Accessibility

If you plan to visit Stintino, you’ll likely fly into either Alghero or Olbia airport (we flew into Olbia from London), but you can also arrive via ferry at the nearby harbour of Porto Torres. From here, there are connections with Spain, Northern Italy and France.

To reach Hotel Cala Reale we drove from Costa Smeralda, in the North East of Sardinia, passing through the pretty village of Tempio Pausania and the picturesque Castelsardo.

As with most of Sardinia, a hire car is needed, so you’ll likely arrive by car. Thankfully, Hotel Cala Reale offers good parking with a spacious car park that’s easy to access. The hotel is in the eastern part of Stintino, which seemed like a quiet residential area with little traffic.

How far from Hotel Cala Reale to La Pelosa Beach?

It takes about 43 minutes to walk to La Pelosa from Hotel Cala Reale on the pavement. It is safe to walk, but please note that in the middle of summer, it will likely be too hot to walk – especially for children or the elderly.

Driving is an option, but parking at La Pelosa can be a nightmare during peak season, as there are limited spaces and parking fees apply. Our recommendation would be to take advantage of the hotel’s free shuttle bus and avoid a parking ticket or struggling to find a space.

A final option would be to hop on one of the hotel’s bikes — they’re a great way to get around, even though we didn’t spot them during our stay.

Hotel gardens and surroundings

Our First Impressions

The staff were friendly, welcoming and quick with the check-in procedure; we were in our room within five minutes of arrival, making the experience stress-free and relaxing after a long drive.

Hotel Cala Reale is made of several low-rise buildings scattered around the gardens and pool. It’s a nice small hotel, the dining area in particular has a modern look and feel, but overall, it’s an understated and simple design. The property was very clean throughout.

The children’s playground in the gardens is handy for families looking to entertain their kids in summer.

Simple and functional rooms

The Room

Our modest double room had everything in the right place. We all know (and dread) hotels that have no plugs or lights next to the bed, showers that are too hot or too cold and dispense water drip by drip, too dark, or too bright, pushing your patience to the limit… but Hotel Cala Reale is well thought out and organised. If it were a car, it would be a Toyota Prius, it will get you there, but it probably won’t make your Instagram stories.

The room was very clean, on the small side but still offered enough space to move around comfortably. There was a small balcony with a table and two chairs overlooking the swimming pool, and since we had a sea view room, we could also see the sea in the far distance. Our room included a double bed and a single bed, both were comfortable, and the sheets were warm enough for a good night’s sleep.

Shower gel was supplied as part of the toiletries. The shower was powerful and worked well. A TV was provided, but the standby light was a little annoying when trying to sleep, so we chose to unplug the whole thing. The room has a mini bar fridge, which was empty, but it can be useful for storing your own items.

The rooms have air conditioning, which is essential for the hot Sardinian summers.

Dining & Breakfast

The buffet breakfast was generous and satisfying, with a mix of savoury options like eggs and ham, as well as sweet pastries and cakes made by the chef.

For dinner we decided to head out to the nearby town, it was a 15minutes walk along an unimpressive B-Road, before we arrived at the cute harbour and restaurant called Il Portico Ristorante Pizzeria – the food was tasty and I would recommend it. But the reviews of the Cala Reale hotel’s restaurant are good, we would have tried if we had enough time.

Pros & Cons: Is It The Right Stay For You?

Pros:

  • Convenient location for exploring La Pelosa and Stintino
  • Clean and modern room
  • Nice, generous breakfast
  • Pleasant swimming pool
  • Excellent value for money

Cons:

  • Basic Decor
  • Distance to the beach is relatively far walking
  • Some guests report noise from room to room and from the road, so we recommend asking for a room facing the pool and bringing earplugs, just in case you have noisy neighbours.

Hotel Cala Reale – Prices & Booking Tips

We stayed in an Economy Double/Twin room booked via Booking.com. With a Genius discount, the rate was €68 per night, including breakfast. This was just after the Easter bank holiday, so it can be considered low season.

Prices can reach up to €230 per night in mid-August, and around €128 in September.
City tax: €0.50 per person, per night.

Rates are standard for the area, but compared to other destinations such as Costa Smeralda, they offer excellent value for money. Overall, the experience matched the price paid — the hotel delivers good value, especially considering its facilities and location.

Tip: Book early for summer stays, as the hotel sells out quickly. Recommended length of stay 1-2 nights.
Season: Open from Easter weekend until October.
