Our Stay at Hotel Aquadulci on Sardinia’s South Coast
We’ve reviewed over 20 hotels across Sardinia, and this one stands out as one of our favourites so far.
Hotel Aquadulci is an understated and elegant Sardinian-owned boutique hotel, that’s quietly charming with a warmth that puts you at ease. Their motto “making you feel at home in the midst of nature” sums it up accurately. It’s a place that warms your soul and delivers the kind of relaxing experience holidays are made for.
With just 41 rooms arranged in a C-shape around a lovely garden and organically curving pool, the hotel has a calm, natural atmosphere. There’s both indoor and alfresco dining facing the water. The whole roof is covered in solar panels — installed this year — giving it a genuine eco-retreat feel.
Why We Chose Hotel Aquadulci
After searching for the perfect hotel in the Chia area, we were looking for something with a location near one of the region’s best beaches (arguably Su Giudeu, Tuerredda, or Cala Cipolla). We opted for Su Giudeu beach as it stood out for its accessibility, natural beauty, and proximity to activities like wine tours, hiking, and historical excursions.
We chose to stay at Hotel Aquadulci for its proximity to Su Giudeu and nearby Cala Cipolla, two beaches we wanted to visit. The reviews were also great, specifically for couples, as well as mentioning the staff could speak multiple languages.
Hotel Aquadulci is as close as it gets to Su Giudeu beach, just a 5-minute walk away. And considering it’s forbidden to build any new structure less than 300km from the coast in Sardinia, for Sardinian standards, this is considered very close to the beach.
Hotel Aquadulci also skirts the nearby Aquadulci pond, home to wonderful flamingos and other water birds. A lovely wooden pathway takes you to the beach from the back of the hotel gardens, meaning you can be one of the first to arrive in the morning (or late at sunset) and have the entire beach to yourself.

First Impressions on Arrival
The hotel is a low-rise, warm pastel coloured building, with a charming gate that leads to the secluded entrance. The reception is decorated with lovely Sardinian art inspired by the traditional ‘Mammuthones’ (an ancient Sardinian carnival ritual), costumes and bells, a small shop, and beautiful food and photography books. Further into the lobby, you’ll find a cosy lounge room with a grand piano and fireplace.
We proceeded to a speedy check-in and a refreshing welcome drink by the bar facing the pool and manicured gardens. Bossa Nova music is playing from the speakers hanging around the property, from palms and pillars, it feels like a statement of the elegant atmosphere Aquadulci wants to set – a peaceful setting where guests cross each other respectfully, without invading each other’s personal space. We sit peacefully, admiring the beautiful gardens and savouring the tranquil atmosphere.
Rooms at Hotel Aquadulci – Comfort, Design, and Sleep Quality
We stayed in what is known as the B&B, Superior Garden, on the lower level. The room is 22 m² with a covered patio next to the garden and pool. The room felt spacious, with a comfy double bed, a wardrobe, and a private terrace that leads directly to the garden and pool – as well as a clever eco-system that switches off the aircon if it detects nobody is in.
We liked the contemporary design with Sardinian elements—matching wooden carpentry, large grand doors all from the same wood, and more Sardinian touches than other hotels. From the art to the wardrobe details in Sardinian patterns, you can tell the owner is Sardinian.
The room was also very quiet, even though the hotel was full, and opposite the entrance, there was a door leading to a private terrace facing the gardens that we had all to ourselves. The terracotta floor tiles felt authentically Sardinian but not rough or rustic, also matching the teak wood frames and doors. Even the picture frames, headboard, and wardrobe were made from the same wood. The bathroom was modern, with an elegant grey and white pattern, a spacious wet room, and a powerful shower.
Other Room Features
- Good size wardrobe
- Lights either side of the bed
- Plugs on both sides to charge your phone (a must!)
- Tea and coffee provided
- Nice welcome pack: water, sweets (meringue), and a handwritten welcome note
- Snacks also included
- Beach towels provided
- Mini bar stocked with beer, wine, Prosecco, and more (paid)
- Full set of toiletries: shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, plus extras like sewing kit and shoe polish

The Pool and Outdoor Spaces
The pool is a good size, which felt busy in the morning but not overwhelmingly so. It has a nice organic shape and wonderful gardens all around, beautiful to watch when swimming.
Dining Experience
Breakfast: Breakfast was generous and delicious, it caters to both Italians in search of pastries, jams and fruits – but also to other nationalities who are after a savoury start of the day. There were all the classics: eggs, bread, bacon, ham cheese, a wide selection of cheeses (that Sardinia is famous for), pastries with custard cream, croissants, cannoli, and lots of tarts. Also, a mixture of fruits, yoghurt, seeds, cereals and nuts (I really liked the dried banana chips!). Of course, being in Italy, we couldn’t miss a delicious cappuccino ordered from the waitress.
Dinner: You have two dinner options: the main fine-dining restaurant at Aquadulci (indoor and alfresco), or the Aquadulci bistro for a more casual meal, open to guests and the public.
We tried the fine dining restaurant. We kicked off with a decent starter of grilled Octopus with a lemon mayo and carrot puree, as well as a panzanella cold soup with croutons, mint, basil, and cucumber, which was delicious and very refreshing.
For mains I would recommend the gnocchi with mussels, tomato sauce and bottarga. Soft and slippery gnocchi with a rich tomato sauce and perfectly cooked mussels. The bottarga is casually scattered over the dish, each bite adding an extra hit of seafood potency.
To finish, the classic Sardinian sebadas dessert was excellent: crispy like shells, with melted cheese and runny honey generously poured over. We had a bottle of Vermentino, crisp and ice-cold, perfect on a muggy evening.
Other restaurants nearby: At first glance on Google Maps, there didn’t seem to be many other dining options in the area, unless you are willing to drive and certainly not better rated than the bistro in the hotel.
Beach Access and Local Area
Hotel Aquadulci has direct access to the Su Giudeu beach. From the swimming pool a path will take you through the nearby car park, along a charming wooden path and within 5 minutes you’ll be at the beach. Please note that the beach can get crowded during the weekends, especially on Sunday when all the locals head there. But it’s a huge beach and you should be able to find space for yourself if you are willing to go that extra hundred meters. I recommend getting there early or later in the afternoon.
Our room came with a lovely book full of ideas on things to do in the area during your stay. For example, Aquadulci can organise wine tastings to the nearby vineyard Cantina Mesa and Cantina Santadi, among the most renowned in the area. Make sure you try the local Carignano del Sulcis, Monica, Vermentino and Nuragus.
Other activities more appropriate to scorching summer heat are boat trips to the military area of Capo Teulada, where you will see some of the best beaches of South Sardinia, such as Cala Zafferano, Porto Pirastu and many others, only accessible by boat.
Then there is the Costa Verde on the nearby West-Coast, famous for its old mines along the mostly ragged coast, in the opposite direction you will find the archaeological area of Nora and Cagliari both reachable on a day trip, during low season mostly as it is too hot for these activities during the peak of summer.
In the months of October or May and June you can also try this wonderful hike to Capo Spartivento.
Other Services Available
- Sport activities
- Golf courses nearby
- More informal Beach bar – Bistro café Acquadulci
- Bicycle, cars and boat rentals
- There is no spa on-site, but the hotel staff offers massages in a secluded area outside the gardens.
Who Hotel Aquadulci Is Best Suited To
The main target is couples, but the hotel is also suitable for families with older children seeking a peaceful, relaxing retreat. It’s an ideal place for a digital detox and for nature lovers. We wouldn’t specifically recommend it for families with very young children as there isn’t much in the way of children’s entertainment, but they can enjoy the nearby beach and swimming pool, depending on age.

Final Verdict – Would We Stay Again?
We found this among the best hotels we have visited so far, although listed as a 4-star hotel – it felt like a 5 star. It was perfect for us (being a couple) and looking for that summer beach holiday retreat, but having the swimming pool as a backup for those days when the beach is very crowded.
Hotel Aquadulci is ideal for couples looking for a peaceful, nature-connected retreat. It doesn’t offer the long list of amenities that some larger resorts do, but sometimes all you need is a pool, a great location, peace and quiet, excellent wine, and great food.
Hotel Aquadulci is open May to end of October, with rates starting from €160 per night in shoulder season and up to €700 in peak season. There are often discounts for 2-night stays in low season, or 3-night stays in high season. The busiest time is from June to August.
