How to Spend 5 Days in Sardinia
The south of Sardinia has an authentic, laid-back atmosphere. Overall, prices are more affordable than in the North, yet you will still find stunning beaches, ancient Nuragic sites, excellent wine experiences and a great selection of luxury stays. Unlike the glitzy Costa Smeralda, evenings here are much calmer, with hidden coastal corners that have yet to be overrun by tourists. That said, expect large crowds in the peak months, July and August, especially at well-known beaches like Su Giudeu and Tuerredda in Chia.
Although I am from Sardinia myself (East Coast), I still love being a tourist on my own island! The itinerary below is perfect for 5 days of relaxation in Sardinia, combining Cagliari the biggest and most vibrant historical city of Sardinia, with the lovely Chia, home of some of the best beaches of Sardinia. We tested this itinerary ourselves in Summer 2025, it was at the end of June, beaches were busy but not overwhelmingly so, the weather was perfect, and we had the most relaxing and exciting time, swimming and exploring the local culture.
Who is this Itinerary Best for?
This itinerary is designed for first-time visitors who want to enjoy the best beaches and coastal towns without rushing, with only 5 days in Sardinia, the best is to just focus on one location or two maximum, Chia is our choice, with a night in Cagliari either on arrival or departure, making driving simpler. The main gateway to South Sardinia is Cagliari, the Sardinian capital, whether you arrive via Elmas Airport or by ferry to the main harbour.
If you visit before May or after September, when the days are cooler, consider spending more time in Cagliari. However, we do not recommend exploring the city during the daytime in peak summer due to the heat.

Sardinia 5 Day Itinerary Day by Day
If you are wondering what to do in Sardinia, you’re spoilt for choice here. From fun water activities, such as simple swimming, kayaking, SUP boarding, to horse riding, wine tasting, boat trips – there’s something for everyone. This area is famous for one of my favourite wines ever, Carignano del Sulcis so do not miss this. And in terms of food, you must try classic Sardinian dishes such as Culurgiones and Maialetto arrosto.
This itinerary could also work if you do not have a car, just arrange for your hotel to come and pick you up and organise all the activities for you, although I recommend hiring one if you drive.
Day 1 – Arrival in Cagliari
Afternoon: Arrive at Cagliari Elmas Airport and settle into your hotel. Stretch your legs with a walk around the Castello district or along the Marina for great food, then take a quick swim at Poetto Beach if you have time and energy.
Evening: Dinner at a local trattoria. Try fregola pasta, culurgiones, fresh fish, or ravioli. Restaurant recommendations include Sa Domu Sarda for meat-focused dishes, Framento for creative pizza, and Antica Cagliari Bistrot or Sa Schironada for seafood.
Recommended tours in Cagliari: If you have time try this amazing Boat tour in Cagliari with 4 Swim Stops, Snorkeling & Prosecco! or a Cagliari City Tour if you want to learn more about Cagliari’s history.
Day 2 – Cagliari → Chia (45 min drive)
Morning: Start your day like a local at the delicious Ditrizio Pasticceria. Enjoy a pastry at the bar with a quick espresso before driving down the coast to Chia.
Check into your hotel and head to Su Giudeu Beach, known for its golden sand and calm emerald waters. Walk along the wooden path and admire the salt lake with flamingos, a perfect photo opportunity.
Lunch ideas include Crar’e Luna or Bistró Café Aquadulci near Su Giudeu Beach, both ideal for a break from the midday heat.
Evening: Dinner in Chia or nearby Pula. Mirage is highly recommended for seafood and a great alfresco atmosphere.
Day 3 – Best Beaches in Chia: Tuerredda + Cala Cipolla
Morning: Visit Tuerredda Beach, known for its turquoise waters and excellent snorkelling. Arrive early in peak season to secure parking, then stay for lunch at the beach bar or bring a picnic from a local supermarket.
Afternoon: Head to Cala Cipolla, a small sheltered cove with soft sand and crystal-clear water, ideal for a peaceful swim away from crowds. There are no facilities here, so bring water and snacks. Parking is about €8, followed by a short 5-minute walk.
Return to your hotel in Chia and enjoy a relaxed evening.
Day 4 – Chia: Hidden beaches and Porto Pino
Morning: Visit S’Ottixeddu, also known as Americans’ Beach, a wild and quiet spot that is perfect for privacy. Bring your own supplies and towel.
Afternoon: Drive to Porto Pino, famous for its towering sand dunes and shallow, crystal-clear waters. It is great for a walk, a late swim, or sunset over the dunes.
Activities near Chia: Your hotel can arrange most of these experiences for you, including kayaking, SUP boarding, snorkelling, boat tours, cycling, hiking, horseback riding, and wine tasting experiences.
- Boat tours along the coast, including Porto Zafferano and Capo Spartivento
- Visit Cagliari’s salt pans, and bring mosquito repellent
- Explore the ruins of Nora and Pula
- Wine tasting: This region is known for excellent wines such as Carignano del Sulcis and Monica, which are reds, as well as Vermentino and Nuragus, which are whites. Visit one of the most renown wineries, Cantina di Santadi, about one hour away from Chia.
Day 5 – Departure Chia to Cagliari
Enjoy the morning at your hotel if you have an afternoon flight or head to Cagliari to catch your flight back home.
Sardinia Travel Tips
Renting a car is essential to reach the best beaches and explore freely at your own pace.
Arrive early or late in the afternoon at popular beaches during July and August to secure parking and space.Keep a mix of wild beaches and beach clubs to balance relaxation and convenience.
How many days in Sardinia? If you are wondering how many days you need in Sardinia, 5 days is just ideal to explore one region. We found the perfect number for relaxation is at about 3 consecutive nights in the same hotel, any more won’t hurt, but any less might feel rushed. It’s recommended to split your 5 days into two destinations maximum, or even just one.
If you are in doubt about Chia for whatever reason, you might be interested in Villasimius instead on the South – East coast. Villasimius is a lovely local town with superb beaches with shallow water and good options for Luxury, Mid-Range and affordable accommodations.
